My favorite gifts to give are those that I create myself to turn something ordinary into something special. Giving framed photographs requires the recipient to find a spot in their house for yet another frame. Giving photographs built into something useful is more thoughtful and usually more unique. One gift idea I came up with recently that was a big hit was to attach a photograph to the retractible part of an office work badge.

My husband already has to wear this every day and the one the office issued him was getting worn from the kids playing with it. What kid doesn't love pulling a retractible cord and letting it go? The kids loved helping with this and these retractible office badge holders are very inexpensive at office suppy stores (just in case the kids' help wasn't so helpful!)

To create this gift, simply buy one or more retractible badge holders and the nicest sticky label paper you can find. Photo-quality sticker paper would work great but isn't really necessary. Then, guess at the photo size you need and print out your favorite photo(s) in draft quality on regular paper first. Cut out the photos in circles to find the right size to fit over the badge holder. Note: Coins work great for marking perfect circles. See if a dime or penny might fit. Once you have the right size, print out your photo(s) on the sticky paper. It's that time of year when we start getting outdoors again, especially those of us with children who have been cooped up inside far too much this Winter! Get outside for a bike ride, to the zoo, to a neighborhood park, or to your own backyard. While you're remembering to pack the sunscreen and water bottles, don't forget to pack the camera. Some of the best photographs I have of my children are those taken at the playground when I just happened to grab the camera on my way out. Read more...
