Box photo storage is actually a great way to store photographs and can even be better than photo album storage. Of course, tossing your photos randomly inside a large, musty old moving box and throwing it in the attic isn’t going to protect them for years to come.
The best boxes for box photo storage are metal, wood, or thick cardboard shoebox sized boxes designed for that purpose. They’re easy to find at many stores and can even be found with a photograph frame built in to add a decorative touch to the top of the box (as that shown here.) Photo storage boxes should not have windows that would allow light inside.
Most photo storage boxes come with divider sheets inside, with which to organize your photographs. Don't fall into the "I'll do it someday" trap and just throw the photos inside the box. By the time you get around to it, your photographs will be bent or, more likely, curved at the edges and possibly even stuck together from the weight of the stack. It's much better for the photos to be stored upright, in small bunches, separated by the divider sheets. If you don't have time to label and group them, at least place them in the box this way from the start.
One of the most difficult things about the box photo storage technique is getting the photos to stand upright if there aren't enough photographs to fill a box. If you have this situation, place fillers (even crumpled up paper towels if need be) to hold the photograph stacks upright. You'll be glad you did.
