You've bought your first digital camera and figured out how to take digital camera photos. Now what?
Taking photographs with a digital camera is the easy and, for most of us, fun part. Don't worry! Getting them onto your computer and printing or playing with your digital photos is almost as easy once you get the hang of it.
The way you'll get your digital camera photos onto your PC will vary depending on the camera and software provided. Most cameras will come with an attachment cable and software to move the photos from your camera onto the computer. However, for about $20, you can usually purchase a card reader which will make this process MUCH easier if you plan to take and save photos regularly. Before you can do this, though, you'll need to know what kind of card your camera uses. Take out the card and read it. Does it say CompactFlash, Smartmedia, SDMemory, something else? You'll want to buy a card-reader for your particular type of card.
By the way, it's easy to find card-readers that can handle 3, 5, or more of these different types of memory cards. It's awfully handy to have the capability of reading cards from other people's cameras and nice to already have the reader if you upgrade your camera and change card types in the future. However, the single-use card-readers tend to be MUCH easier to use. The card only fits into one slot and only one way since the device is designed for just one type of memory card. The multi-function readers often require you to put smaller cards into a slot that's larger than your card. It will fit IF you get it low enough or high enough but, if you don't, it can fall in and be quite a pain to retrieve. This is just something to think about.
