Refrigerator Photo magnets are a great way to display your photographs without taking up valuable wall and table top space. Digital photo fridge magnets are also functional and make great gifts.
Making magnets out of your photographs can be as simple as purchasing magnetic frames that you slide your photos inside. There are also elaborate craft projects to display photos on magnets more artfully.
One simple technique to use with digital photos (or photos you've scanned and so are now digital) is to purchase photo-quality magnet sheets at an office supply or computer store, print several photos on a sheet, cut them out, and stick them up.
In fact, this is an ideal method if you want to create your own save the date photo magnets or other photo magnet announcements (like photo magnet birth announcements). Magnets are particularly useful for these types of announcements where the recipient might need to be reminded about a date, so sticking it on the fridge keeps it font and center in the memory.
Since I love crafts that recycle items which would otherwise be thrown away, I like to turn all of the marketing magnets I get in the mail into photograph magnets. They come in a variety of interesting shapes and sizes and generally stick a little better than the purchased magnet sheets (since those must be thin enough to go through an inkjet printer.)
To make these refrigerator picture magnets, simply find a photograph a little larger than the magnet, lay the magnet on top, and cut around it. Then, glue it on and let it dry.
One magnet photo craft I found several years ago made a very popular Christmas gift with our families: I purchased the larger size glass stones generally used for floral arrangements, you can find at craft stores, and glued small photos to the back to show through the glass. Remember to put the glue on the picture side - not the back - of the photo. Then, once that glue dries thoroughly, you simply glue smaller magnets to the back of the photo.
Note: This is the same technique you can use to create photo stones (or photo beads) to embed in
homemade stepping stones.
Just leave out the magnet.
You can also find very small, round, and very powerful magnets at craft stores.
To complete the effect, wrap these magnets inside a small tin that the magnets will stick to.
