Wedding Invitation Woes!

I am attempting my first wedding invitation involving photos of the couple and it is just about to send me over the edge! They are choosing to use b/w photos so I have finally got a handle on the desaturation deal as opposed to grayscale. Their colors are brown and purple so I have tried the b/w photos on light purple background and brown but it just doesn't seem to jive well. The pics were sent to me digitally from a pro photographer so I'm sure it is just me but the pics still seem unclear and fuzzy!! Any suggestions????? Thanks so much for taking time to help a desperately novice designer!!!!!!!!!!
